₦5.2 Billion Fraud: Court Orders Ex-JAMB Registrar Ojerinde to Face Defence
The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected a no-case submission filed by Professor Dibu Ojerinde, the former Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), in his ongoing trial over alleged ₦5.2 billion fraud.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu ruled on Tuesday that the prosecution—the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC)—had established a prima facie case, presenting sufficient evidence to warrant Ojerinde entering a defence.
“The no-case submission fails and is hereby dismissed,” Justice Egwuatu declared.
The court then adjourned the matter to July 16, 2025, for Ojerinde to open his defence.

Ojerinde is facing 18 counts of alleged corruption, abuse of office, and diversion of public funds during his tenure as the head of both JAMB and the National Examinations Council (NECO). He was first arraigned in July 2021 and has consistently pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The ICPC accuses him of:
-
Awarding corrupt financial benefits to himself,
-
Diverting government funds for personal use,
-
Engaging in multiple fraudulent transactions that breach the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act (2000) and the Advance Fee Fraud Act (2006).
A previous attempt to negotiate a plea bargain in February 2022 collapsed, prompting the anti-corruption agency to proceed with full prosecution. The ICPC has since closed its case after calling several witnesses.
The trial now enters a new phase, with Ojerinde expected to begin presenting his defence next month.
