18 Serving Governors Under Investigation, Action to Follow After Their Tenure – EFCC Chair, Olukoyede

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that the anti-corruption agency is actively investigating 18 governors who are currently in office across the country.

Olukoyede made the disclosure during a sensitisation programme held in Lagos on Friday, July 18. While addressing participants, he clarified that investigations into public officials do not necessarily have to wait until the end of their tenure. However, enforcement actions are usually deferred until they leave office.

“As I speak to you now, the EFCC is investigating about 18 sitting governors. Once their tenures end, we will proceed to the next stage,” he stated.

He also recounted a bizarre incident involving a former Nigerian governor who fled to the United Kingdom immediately after leaving office to evade EFCC arrest. According to Olukoyede, the ex-governor was apprehended by UK authorities after hotel staff mistook him for a mentally ill individual during his lavish birthday party.

“While in the UK, he threw a birthday party in his hotel. During the celebration, he began spraying £50 and £10 notes. The hotel manager, shocked by the display, thought something was wrong and contacted emergency services. When the Metropolitan Police arrived, they attempted to put him in an ambulance, thinking he was mentally unstable,” Olukoyede narrated.

He added that the situation was only de-escalated after the intervention of the former governor’s friends and two serving Nigerian governors who were present at the party.
