2023 Election Law tit bits: Punishment for stating a candidate has withdrawn from election

By P. D. Pius, Esq.

It is now a criminal offence for you to state that a candidate/aspirant has withdrawn from an election before or during an election without confirming directly from such a candidate.

It is punishable by 6 months imprisonment. See section 123(b) of Electoral Act 2022. My friend who was a candidate suffered this at last election and many voters did not vote him because some hirelings went to town with false news that he has withdrawn. If you do it now, it’s 6 months improvement 😁
