2027: Donald Duke Better Than All Candidates, But Quality Alone Won’t Win Election— Baba-Ahmed

The National Chairman of the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has described the party’s presidential candidate, Donald Duke, as the strongest contender in the field ahead of the 2027 general election, while acknowledging that the quality of a candidate alone would not guarantee victory at the polls.

Baba-Ahmed made the remarks during an interview with Arise News on Wednesday, as opposition parties intensify efforts to build a broader coalition ahead of the presidential election.

“Candidate for candidate, we think we have the best. We’re very fortunate to have him. So, candidate for candidate, Donald Duke is better than all the candidates out there,” he said.

However, the PRP chairman said the party remained realistic about the challenges of winning an election, stressing that Duke’s credentials would not, on their own, be sufficient to secure victory.

“However, we’re realistic enough to know that just the quality of your candidate doesn’t just win the election, which is the reason why the PRP is in the frontline, right at the heart of this coalition building,” he said.

According to Baba-Ahmed, the party’s involvement in ongoing coalition discussions is aimed at building a broader political alliance capable of competing effectively in the 2027 election.

He said the process was being guided by consensus and constitutional procedures rather than an attempt to impose Duke as the coalition’s candidate based solely on his profile.

“We don’t want to prejudge or preempt anything by saying, ‘Because he’s the best, he has to be the candidate,’ by whatever means you come to do that. We want to build a coalition of parties that think the way we do,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed also said the importance of the 2027 election extended beyond the interests of individual political parties, describing it as a critical moment for Nigeria’s future direction.

“Nigeria must, in the next four years, make a difference in the manner in which this country either develops or moves away from its fault lines, or just simply sinks into that. It really is that important,” he said.

His comments come amid growing coalition-building efforts among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 presidential contest, with Duke emerging as one of the figures who could potentially play a role in such an alliance.
