“70% of APC Members Are Former PDP Politicians” — Bishop Yahaya Slams Defections, Says Leaders Only Follow the ‘National Cake’
The Archbishop of Kaduna Province and Bishop of the Kaduna Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Timothy Yahaya, has criticized the widespread practice of political defections in Nigeria, labeling many politicians as “opportunists” driven by self-interest rather than national progress.
Speaking at the 24th Synod of the Kaduna Diocese held at St. Michael’s Cathedral, Yahaya pointed out that a majority of current All Progressives Congress (APC) members were originally members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — the very party they once opposed.
“I say this without fear of contradiction: 70 percent of them have been in the PDP,” the bishop declared. “It’s the same group of people jumping ship — and who are they? They are opportunists chasing the national cake.”

Yahaya called for a law to restrict defections until just months before a general election, arguing that frequent party-switching undermines good governance. “Government officials must be allowed to focus on delivering democratic dividends, not political calculations,” he said.
He lamented the death of a true political opposition in Nigeria, attributing it to politicians’ unrelenting pursuit of power for personal gain. “If the national cake moves to another party tomorrow, they will all migrate. What we call opposition in Nigeria today is nonexistent.”
The Archbishop warned that such self-serving politics had severely damaged Nigeria’s development, especially when compared with countries like Singapore, which started at similar economic levels in the 1960s.
“Back then, Nigeria and Singapore were on the same footing. Today, look where they are, and look at us,” he said. “The naira was once respected, even in London. Now, you can’t even take it to Ghana without being laughed at.”
Despite the criticism, Yahaya expressed strong hope in Nigeria’s potential, urging citizens and leaders to rekindle their patriotism.
“This is the greatest country in the whole universe. If we get it right, the world will come to us,” he said passionately. “I’m not a politician, but I pray for credible leaders who put Nigeria first — not themselves, their tribes, or their parties.”
He concluded with a heartfelt plea: “May God touch the consciences of those in power, so they remember the people — and stop making them orphans in their own land.”
