Why I joined APC, by Akwa Ibom gov Eno
Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno on Thursday formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), capping months of speculation with a dramatic show of political realignment. Joining him in the move were the majority of his State Executive Council, House of Assembly members, federal lawmakers, and local government chairmen.
The mass defection mirrors a similar wave in Delta State, where key figures had earlier dumped the PDP for the APC.
While three commissioners—Ini Ememobong, Emem Bob, and Prof. Emem Ibanga—resigned in protest to remain in the PDP, most officials pledged loyalty to Governor Eno, citing his visionary leadership.

Welcoming the governor were nine APC governors led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, who said, “This is not a defection; it’s a movement. Akwa Ibom is now aligned with the centre.”
In a stirring speech, Eno quoted the Dalai Lama on embracing change while maintaining core values:
“We are gathered to witness change while affirming the constancy of our collective values.”
He formally submitted his resignation from the PDP and explained his decision to join the APC was driven by “enlightened state interest” — aligning Akwa Ibom with the federal government to attract more resources and development.
“I admire President Tinubu’s boldness in tackling Nigeria’s economic challenges. His removal of the fuel subsidy, though painful, has increased funds for impactful state projects,” Eno said.
Describing his move as a “gift to the President,” Eno said his governance style would remain inclusive and bipartisan, emphasizing unity over partisanship.
APC leaders, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, lauded the governor’s decision. In a message delivered by Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, she described Eno’s move as courageous and necessary for deeper integration with the national leadership.
The event’s highlight was Governor Uzodimma presenting Eno with the symbolic APC broom, declaring,
“You will not regret this decision. Akwa Ibom will never be the same again.”
APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, called the defection a major boost for the party and pledged total support to Eno’s administration.
Present at the high-profile event were Governors from Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Ebonyi, Cross River, Ekiti, and Edo, along with key APC figures and federal ministers.
Despite the wave of defections, a few PDP loyalists held their ground. Ememobong, a former information commissioner, said his resignation was driven by principle but maintained personal respect for the governor.
Governor Eno’s realignment marks a significant shift in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape, with the APC now poised to deepen its influence in the South-South.
