Abia Assembly resolves crises, recalls suspended members

The Abia State House of Assembly has resolved its crises and recalled some members suspended on May 2, 2023.

The House, however, announced that the former Deputy Speaker, Ifeanyi Uchendu, who was impeached on May 2 as the Deputy Speaker through a House Resolution, remained impeached.

It maintained that Hon Mandela Obasi, who replaced Uchendu, retains his seat.

The House recalled how some members of the House allegedly gathered at a government facility, known as Emeka Omeruah Guest House, on May 2, where they purportedly announced the impeachment of the Speaker, Hon Chinedum Orji, outside the House Complex.

The Abia parliament stated that the actions and inactions of the House members created a crisis in the House.

The House would reconvene on May 26 to hold an extraordinary session for the presentation and consideration of End-of Tenure Reports from Committees.

But in a swift reaction, one of the recalled members, Hon Chijioke Chukwu, who confirmed the peace agreement, however, said Uchendu should be returned to his seat if a true reconciliation would be achieved.

“If we are sincere about a peaceful resolution of the House, it means that Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Uchendu remains the Deputy Speaker of the House”, said Chukwu.

News men recalls that before the recall of the suspended members, the gate to the House of Assembly was, on Tuesday this week, occupied by a truckload of policemen who guarded the facility.

The Speaker of the House, Hon Chinedum Orji, who explained the presence of the security men, urged Abians not to panic.
