ADC Warns LASIEC to Uphold Transparency and Impartiality in 2025 Lagos Local Government Elections
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to ensure the 2025 local government elections in Lagos are conducted with transparency and impartiality.
The party also announced that it is fielding candidates in the 20 constitutionally recognised Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Saturday’s council election, in line with a Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy.
According to the Reports, LASIEC is conducting elections across the 20 LGAs and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.

Out of the 18 registered political parties in the country, 15 are participating in the election. A document from LASIEC revealed that although 19 political parties initially expressed interest in the poll, only 15 submitted candidate lists ahead of the exercise.
George Ashiru, Chairman of ADC in Lagos State, said the party’s decision to contest in only the 20 LGAs was guided by a 2024 Supreme Court judgment, which reaffirmed the constitutional recognition of Nigeria’s 774 LGAs, including those in Lagos.
“In line with the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy, we chose to focus our campaigns and field candidates only in the 20 constitutionally recognised local government areas,” Ashiru said.
He added that the ADC is committed to upholding the rule of law and adhering strictly to constitutional provisions in all its political activities.
Ashiru further explained that although the party was initially hesitant about participating in the election, internal pressure from aspirants and members in various LGAs led to the decision to take part.
“At the beginning, we were against participation, but our members and aspirants insisted, especially those who felt they had strong support in some areas,” he said. “The party chose to abide by the constitution and focus our participation on the recognised councils.”
Ashiru urged LASIEC to conduct the elections fairly, stating that the credibility of the commission would be judged by the outcome of the polls.
“At the end of this election, people will rate the commission because, ideally, parties win in their areas of strength,” he added.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) remains the most dominant party in the race, fielding candidates across all 57 local councils and 376 wards. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) follows with candidates in 45 councils and 259 wards.
The Labour Party is presenting 22 chairmanship and 130 councillorship candidates. Zenith Labour Party has six chairmanship and 21 councillorship candidates.
Other parties listed by LASIEC as having approved candidates include Accord, African Action Alliance (AAA), Allied People’s Movement (APM), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), National Rescue Movement (NRM), Young Progressives Party (YPP), Youth Party (YP), and Action Peoples Party (APP), alongside the ADC.
