Afenifere Disowns ‘Fake Faction’ Over Call for SGF Akume’s Suspension in Fraud Scandal
The Yoruba socio-political-cultural organization, Afenifere, has disowned a self-styled faction that recently demanded the suspension of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume.
In a statement signed by Mr. Abagun Omololu, Afenifere’s Organising Secretary, the group described the statement attributed to them as a mischievous and unauthorized communication. Omololu emphasized that Afenifere has no factions and operates solely under the leadership of Pa Reuben Fasoranti.
Omololu warned the public against fraudulent individuals masquerading as Afenifere members to push personal or partisan agendas. He accused some members of the Labour Party in Yorubaland of exploiting the organization’s name for political gain. The statement condemned the attempt to link the SGF to an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation as dishonest and malicious blackmail.

It is public knowledge that the EFCC probe originated from a complaint by Senator Akume himself, who flagged irregularities connected to Andrew Uchi, a man arrested for alleged multi-billion naira bribery and money laundering. Uchi, previously rumored to be an aide to the SGF, was said to have acquired numerous properties illegally. However, the SGF’s office clarified that Uchi is not connected to Akume, urging the public to await the ongoing investigation’s outcome.
Despite these clarifications, the so-called Afenifere faction called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend Akume and gave EFCC a seven-day ultimatum to release investigation updates, threatening nationwide protests.
Reacting to this, a coalition of civil society organizations denounced the faction’s actions as baseless, politically motivated, and damaging. They reiterated that Uchi is not an appointee or employee of the SGF and that the EFCC investigation was initiated by Akume himself. The coalition condemned attempts to manipulate public opinion against the SGF, calling the faction’s actions offensive and disrespectful.
The coalition stressed its opposition to corruption in all forms but warned against unprofessional and malicious attacks on national leaders.
