Akangbe SAN to Makurdi Lawyers: “Faith in Justice System Is Shaken—Insecurity and Harassment of Lawyers Sadly Becoming Normal”
Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb(UK), has expressed strong support for the NBA Makurdi Branch during their 2025 Annual Law Week, praising their courage and commitment in confronting the current challenges of legal practice in Nigeria.
In a goodwill message shared with the media, Akangbe applauded the branch’s resilience and the timely relevance of this year’s theme: “Law Practice in a Volatile Landscape: Evolving Trends and Coping Strategies.” He described the theme as a direct response to the harsh realities facing the legal profession, including declining public confidence in the justice system, increasing insecurity, and the frequent harassment of lawyers by security agencies.
“This theme speaks directly to the time we live in—a time when faith in the justice system is shaken,” Akangbe said. He also criticized lawyers who flout the Remuneration Order, stating such actions devalue the legal profession.

Despite these difficulties, Akangbe praised the Makurdi Branch for taking a bold stance and using Law Week as a platform for reflection, strategic thinking, and recommitment to legal values.
“I salute your courage. I salute your determination to confront these issues head-on,” he said, urging members to stay united, proactive, and committed to upholding the profession’s core values.
He concluded by wishing the branch a successful and impactful Law Week.
