Ali Modu Sheriff Predicts ADC’s Collapse Within Three Months, Says Presidential Ambitions of Atiku, Obi, Amaechi Will Tear Coalition Apart
Former Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, has cast doubt on the survival of the newly formed coalition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), predicting that it will not last.
The ADC was recently unveiled by a group of opposition politicians—including former governors, former ministers, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—who aim to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Monday, Sheriff argued that the ADC’s momentum will fizzle out within three months, primarily due to internal rivalries stemming from the presidential ambitions of several prominent members.

Shortly after the coalition’s formation, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi both expressed their intention to contest the 2027 election. Speculation also surrounds Atiku Abubakar, who is expected to pursue the party’s presidential ticket.
Sheriff believes this convergence of presidential hopefuls will lead to internal conflict and the eventual breakdown of the coalition.
According to him, Peter Obi is likely to exit the ADC soon and return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he intends to vie for the presidency.
“This ADC that you’re talking about—I can tell you for free—give them three months, it will die down because all of them are presidential materials, and only one can be the candidate,” Sheriff said. “Atiku has been the Vice President of Nigeria. So for him, it’s president or nothing. Peter Obi ran under the Labour Party. His ambition is to become President.”
He added, “Information available to me is that any moment from now, Obi would go back to the PDP and run as a presidential candidate under the PDP.”
Sheriff also questioned the political strength of other key figures in the coalition.
“That leaves Vice President Atiku and Amaechi. So tell me, which states do they control?”
Meanwhile, the ADC has clarified its stance on the contentious issue of power rotation between Nigeria’s North and South. The party emphasized that it is not focused on zoning but is instead committed to building a broad-based political movement rooted in grassroots support across the country.
