Anambra Businessman Sues Ex-Rep Chinedu Obidigwe for Alleged Assault Over Accountability Demands

A businessman, Mr. Chinedu Anaukwu, has taken a former federal lawmaker from Anambra State, Chinedu Obidigwe, to court over an alleged brutal assault in 2023 after he demanded accountability for Obidigwe’s tenure in office.

Obidigwe, who represented Anambra East/West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, reportedly attacked Anaukwu shortly before the 2023 general elections.

Anaukwu claims the assault followed a post he made in a WhatsApp group, Aguleri World Forum, where he publicly questioned Obidigwe’s performance and asked him to account for his use of constituency funds before seeking re-election.

He alleged that in response, Obidigwe confronted him with over a dozen thugs who violently beat him until he lost consciousness.

When the case came up for pretrial hearing on Tuesday at the Otuocha High Court in Anambra East Local Government Area, Anaukwu’s counsel, Chief Gozie Obi (SAN), withdrew charges against two of the defendants, identified as aides of Obidigwe who participated in the attack.

According to Obi, the second defendant is deceased, and the fifth defendant had not been served court processes. He explained that the decision to withdraw charges against them was to allow the case to proceed, stressing that the primary target of the lawsuit remains Obidigwe, under whose instruction the assault allegedly occurred.

Obidigwe was represented in court by his lawyer, Barrister Emmanuel Offoh. The case was adjourned to November 18 for continuation of pretrial proceedings.

Anaukwu is seeking N200 million in compensation for the injuries and trauma he suffered, as well as the conviction of the former lawmaker.
