ASUU Shuts Classrooms: Lecturers Invoke No-Pay-No-Work Over Delayed Salaries
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a halt to academic activities nationwide, invoking a no-pay-no-work policy in response to the Federal Government’s persistent delay in paying lecturers’ salaries.
ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, revealed the decision during an interview in Abuja on Friday. He accused the government of deliberately punishing lecturers for pulling out of the controversial Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), a salary payment platform long opposed by the union.
The Federal Government recently removed university staff from IPPIS, but Piwuna says the move has worsened the situation. “Since leaving IPPIS, salary payments have been inconsistent. We get paid 10 days into a new month or even later. This is unacceptable, especially with the rising cost of living,” he said.

With the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha (Sallah) approaching, many lecturers remain unpaid for June. “Our members can’t even celebrate Sallah with dignity. So, we’ve resolved to stop teaching until salaries are paid,” Piwuna declared, adding that union branches across the country have already started complying with the new directive.
Non-academic staff unions are also voicing their anger. Mohammed Ibrahim, head of the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), criticized the government’s silence.
“Last month, we sent several letters seeking answers about our unpaid salaries. We got no response,” Ibrahim said. “We’ve contacted the Accountant General and copied the education and labour ministries. Yet, nothing has changed. University workers are being treated like second-class citizens.”
As tension builds, Nigeria’s public universities face another round of disruptions, with both academic and non-academic staff demanding urgent action from the Federal Government.
