Atiku: New Opposition Coalition Is About Nigeria, Not Political Gladiators
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that the emerging opposition coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is not driven by personal political ambitions of figures like himself, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, or Nasir El-Rufai, but rather by a shared commitment to rescuing Nigeria’s democracy from what he described as the ruling party’s growing authoritarianism and manipulation of the electoral system.
Responding to media speculation about a looming power struggle over the coalition’s 2027 presidential ticket, Atiku clarified that the effort is not about positioning individuals for office, but about restoring electoral integrity and democratic governance.
Atiku made these remarks through his media adviser, Mazi Paul Ibe, during an exclusive interview with Vanguard in Abuja on Monday.

He emphasized that the coalition’s objective is to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic framework, which he claimed is under threat from the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration.
“This is not an anti-Tinubu project,” Atiku stated. “It is a pro-Nigerian movement. Nigerians must be the ultimate beneficiaries of this effort.”
Meanwhile, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) announced that it has disowned former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and banned him from the party for 30 years, accusing him of not registering as a member and attempting to drag the party into the coalition without proper mandate.
Atiku further alleged that the ruling APC is already laying the groundwork to rig the 2027 elections. He pointed to the controversial appointment of a former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) official—who once headed its Information Technology (IT) department—as the APC’s new national chairman.
“The appointment of a former INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, particularly one who previously led the IT unit, is deeply concerning,” Atiku said. “It clearly signals that the APC is not preparing to compete based on performance, but rather preparing to manipulate the electoral process.”
He called for unity among opposition parties and warned that internal divisions would only serve the interests of those clinging to power.
“Those who oppose us are watching closely. They are ready to exploit even the smallest cracks within our ranks. Unity is our strength—when we stand together, we become difficult to defeat,” he stressed.
Atiku concluded by reiterating that the movement is not about individuals, but about Nigeria’s collective future.
“Our mission is about empowering Nigerians to reclaim and rebuild their nation. We must stay focused and avoid distractions. This is the true purpose of our coalition,” he said.
