Babachir Lawal: Northern Politicians Won’t Win in 2027 Unless They Join ADC

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has stated that no elected official from northern Nigeria, including governors seeking re-election, stands a chance of returning to office in 2027 unless they defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking during an appearance on Sunday Politics, Lawal accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of marginalising the North and failing to deliver on its electoral promises.

“Which northern elected official will go to campaign on the platform of the APC this coming election? Nobody,” he declared. “Unless ab initio, you have no plan to win election. I can’t see anywhere.”

Pressed on whether northern governors seeking a second term might succeed under the APC, Lawal maintained, “Unless they join the ADC, they will not win… simply because they belong to a destructive party. A party that woefully failed to perform.”

He revealed that discussions were already underway between the ADC and several northern governors, suggesting a potential wave of defections ahead of the 2027 general election.

Lawal also echoed concerns raised by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who recently accused the Tinubu administration of sidelining the North in its infrastructure agenda.

“Every Nigerian that has anything to do with the North will know that no infrastructure work is going on at any level,” Lawal said. “No projects are going on—at least they are not visible to the eye. Maybe in their imagination, maybe in the spirit—but we don’t see it.”

The former SGF, who is an engineer by profession, argued that both he and Kwankwaso are particularly sensitive to the absence of development projects.

“There’s nothing on the ground. We don’t see any construction work. We don’t see any infrastructure going on. No federal government project whatsoever,” he lamented.
