Babangida on Mokwa Tragedy: “The Flood Was Ordained by God and Beyond Our Control”
A catastrophic flood in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State has claimed the lives of over 200 people, displacing countless families and devastating entire communities.
Describing the event as “ordained by God,” former Nigerian military president Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) expressed sorrow over the tragedy, calling it “beyond human power.” He made the remarks while receiving the Niger State Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, who led a delegation on a Sallah homage to his Minna residence.
“What happened in Mokwa is unfortunate,” Babangida said. “But it is ordained by Allah. It is beyond our powers, and this is why we should all continue to pray for the souls of the deceased.”

He offered his condolences to the victims, their families, and the Niger State government, while commending Governor Umaru Bago’s administration for its developmental strides.
In response, Deputy Governor Garba acknowledged Babangida’s concern, saying,
“The people of Niger State and Nigeria in general are appreciative of your diligent service to the country… we will not fail you.”
The Mokwa flood, one of the worst in recent memory, wreaked havoc across the region. Survivors have described heartbreaking scenes of loss and desperation.
Rabi Musa, a resident, lost her husband and three children.
“My husband tried to save the children but was taken by the flood. I am alone now,” she tearfully recounted.
Malam Balarabe Isah, another survivor, lost his three wives and seven children, calling the incident “traumatic and beyond comprehension.”
Properties worth millions of naira were swept away, and commercial activity in the region has ground to a halt. The Mokwa General Hospital is overwhelmed with patients, and authorities fear a possible outbreak of waterborne diseases due to limited access to clean water and electricity.
In the wake of the tragedy, the state government has vowed to investigate the root causes of the disaster and take measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
As Mokwa struggles to recover, calls for urgent humanitarian support grow louder, with displaced residents in desperate need of shelter, medical care, and economic relief.
