Blasphemy: Islamic countries call for boycott of French products
Shortly after the French President supported the making of depictive cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), there have been calls from various countries to boycott French goods.
At the moment, the social media is awash with #Boycott_French_Goods, trending on Twitter in all major Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Turkey, Bangladesh, UAE, and Pakistan.
The development came after a teacher was beheaded near Paris by an 18-year-old man Abdullah Anzorov over the display of cartoons depicting the Prophet (PBUH)
The French President paid tribute to the teacher as a âquiet heroâ and defended his actions as Freedom of expression and in a televised address to the Nation, adding that France âwill not give up our cartoonsâ.
Later France raided multiple houses of Muslim families and even closed down the Grand Mosque of Paris in what it stated a clampdown against âIslamist terroristsâ.
The Muslim world was enraged over the statements given by the French President and multiple leaders reacted to the statements by the French President.
Turkish President Erdogan said French President Emmanuel Macron needed mental âtreatmentâ over response to beheading.
The Saudi Council of Senior Scholars, a few days ago condemned the statements of the President and said in a statement: âIt is the duty of the wise in all parts of the world, institutions and individuals to condemn these abuses that are not related to freedom of expression and thought but rather are pure fanaticism and a free service for those with extremist ideasâ
Pakistanâs Prime Minister Khan in a series of tweets condemned the statements of the French President and said:
âHallmark of a leader is he unites human beings, as Mandela did, rather than dividing them. This is a time when Pres Macron could have put healing touch & denied space to extremists rather than creating further polarization & marginalization that inevitably leads to radicalizationâ
The Pakistani premier even wrote a letter to Facebookâs CEO Mark Zuckerburg requesting him âto ban Islamophobia just as Facebook has banned questioning or criticizing the holocaust.â
Individuals on Twitter called upon a mass campaign to boycott French products and chains which soon began trending on top in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Turkey, Bangladesh, UAE, and Pakistan.
Videos also emerged on the social media of supermarkets removing French products in various countries and decimation of the French presidentâs images.
Qatarâs largest supermarket group Almeira has announced the removal of French products. Earlier, traders in Kuwait also announced a boycott pic.twitter.com/StD3AntKfa
