CAC Registrar General, Garba Abubakar, allegedly blacklist Lawyers for protesting delay in Incorporation Process
The Registrar General of the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, Mr Garba Abubakar has been accused of withdrawing the accreditation of Lawyers that staged protest against inefficiency at the Organization and undue delays in the incorporation of documents. BarristerNG gathered that Mr Abubakar had blacklisted many lawyers that participated in the protest.
Lawyers had in 23rd July 2020 gathered in front of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) building on Tigris Crescent, Abuja to protest against the leadership of Mr Garba Abubakar which they described as inefficient and dictatorial.
The lawyers, had accused Abubakar who is the Registrar General and Chief Executive Officer of the CAC of frustrating President Muhammadu Buhari’s Ease of Doing Business reforms.
The lawyers lamented the treatment and introduction of manual processes which they claimed have taken the management of the CAC back to the 80s. The Lawyers accused Mr Abubakar of being only concerned about making money and frustrating lawyers.
Information available to BarristerNG.com reveals that in reaction to the protest, the Registrar General of CAC blacklisted many of the lawyers that participated in protest and officially withdrew their accreditation.
Lawyers, Accountants and Chartered Secretaries are required by CAC to be accredited to the Commission to be able to transact business on-behalf of clients at the commission. The Accreditation is however not Free as payment ranging from Five thousand Naira or more is required.
A Lawyer, Onyeka Obiajulu had taken to facebook in October, to bemoan the blacklisting of fellow Lawyer because they exercise their constitutional right to protest against perceived wrong by the CAC RG.
Some of the Blacklisted Lawyers who spoke to barristerNG.com on the condition of anonymity confirmed that indeed, their accreditation were withdrawn after the protest however, there are promises from staff of the Commission that the withdrawal will be lifted when they show repentance and proper cause that they will not protest against the commission again.
When BaristerNG spoke with Mr Obiajulu, he also confirmed that lawyers accreditation were withdrawn because they protested against incompetence at the commission. He expressed dismay that the registrar General who is also a lawyer will resort to such low tactics in an attempt to intimidate lawyers.
