Chief Justice of Nigeria appoints Bridget Edokwe Esq, Aliyu Abubakar Esq and 98 others as Notaries Public

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon Justice Tanko Mohammed has appointed 100 Practicing Lawyers in the Federal Capital Territory as Notaries Public of Nigeria.

 

 

Among the Lawyers appointed are the Editor-in-Chief of the BarristerNG.com Law and Politics News blog, Bridget Edokwe Esq and the Chairman of the NBA Gwagwalada Branch, Isah Aliyu Abubakar Esq.

 

While swearing in the newly appointed Notaries Public on 8th October 2021, The Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory, Hon. Justice Baba Yusuf admonished them to uphold the very best of their new office and ensure that only the best practices are followed while discharging their duties.

The New Notaries while appreciating the Chief Judge, thanked all the Judges that recommended them to their new offices.

 

A notary public of the common law is a public officer constituted by law to serve the public in non-contentious matters usually concerned with estates, deeds, powers-of-attorney, and foreign and international business.

A notary’s main functions are to administer oaths and affirmations, take affidavits and statutory declarations, witness and authenticate the execution of certain classes of documents, take acknowledgments of deeds and other conveyances, protest notes and bills of exchange, provide notice of foreign drafts, prepare marine or ship’s protests in cases of damage, provide exemplifications and notarial copies, and perform certain other official acts depending on the jurisdiction.

Any such act is known as a notarisation, according to Wikipedia.
