I extend the well wishes of the Pan African Lawyers Union (PALU).

We congratulate Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her confirmation as the next Director General of the World Trade Organization. Time and time again, Dr. Okonjo Iweala has broken records in the field of economics and international development. She was the first woman to serve as the Minister of Finance in Nigeria, as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and now she will become the next Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), making her the first African to occupy the position.

We are beyond confident that Dr. Okonjo Iweala will bring to bear her unique expertise in trade and economic expansion in her new role, as she facilitates global rules of trade between nations, and implements policies to build trade capacity, which many developing countries in Africa desperately need.

She has pledged to address the economic and health consequences brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, and as practitioners in the dynamic field of Law, who have quickly grown from traditional litigators to practitioners with legal advisory capacity in critical matters pertaining to economic growth and sustainability, we fully support this mandate, and look forward to contributing to its realization.

From the Lawyers of Africa, Congratulations!

Emeka J. P. Obegolu, Esq.

President, PALU
