Defence Minister Makes U-Turn, Vows to Turn Security Summit Resolutions into Action
Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, has reversed his earlier opposition to the National Assembly’s proposed security summit, calling it a “timely initiative” to address the nation’s growing insecurity. Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, Badaru emphasized the importance of dialogue and pledged full participation in the two-day summit, promising to ensure its resolutions are turned into actionable reforms.
His new position contrasts sharply with his earlier comments at a ministerial briefing, where he had questioned the summit’s usefulness and favored direct strategy development instead. He had also disputed the House of Representatives’ claim that insurgents were better armed than Nigeria’s military.
The Senate rebuked Badaru last week for downplaying the summit and warned against comments that could create friction between the executive and legislature. Now aligning with the legislature’s initiative, Badaru commended the National Assembly’s efforts and expressed readiness to champion its outcomes.

Northern Governors Unite on Border Security
Meanwhile, the Northern States Governors’ Forum has resolved to set up inter-state platforms to coordinate border surveillance across northern Nigeria. The decision was made during a joint meeting with traditional rulers in Kaduna.
Gombe State Governor and Forum Chairman, Muhammadu Yahaya, said the initiative aims to address insecurity through regional collaboration. The forum also praised President Bola Tinubu for his ongoing support in tackling security and infrastructure issues in the region.
Additionally, the governors reiterated support for the creation of state police and urged the National Assembly to expedite the necessary legal framework. They pledged increased backing for both federal and local security efforts.
Bello Turji’s New Threats Spark Fear in Sokoto Communities
Amid these national-level efforts, panic is spreading in Sokoto State’s Isa Local Government Area after fresh threats from notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. Residents of Bafarawa and surrounding villages, including Kamara, Arume, and Kagara, reportedly fled their homes following Turji’s ultimatum to vacate or face violence.
Turji, a key figure in Sokoto’s wave of banditry, has long terrorized the region. Local sources expressed frustration at what they described as a lack of robust government response, with some alleging protection of Turji by unknown actors.
Multiple villages—including Surudubu, Gebe, Tsullawa, and Garin Fadama—are now on high alert amid growing insecurity.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed ongoing deployment of personnel to affected areas, with spokesperson ASP Ahmed Rufai assuring the public that operatives are on ground and ready to contain threats.
