While Suleiman was invited to the Abuja office, Barr. Tareri was invited to the Asaba office through his employers but while Apostle Suleiman was allowed to go home that same day, the man who mobilized support for him has been in DSS detention since Tuesday.
The news of the continuous detention of Barr. Tareri was shared by a Warri based Lawyer and human right activist, Barr. Kunle Edun in a social media forum of Lawyers. Thereafter Lawyers in the forum initiated the hashtag #DssFreeTareriAvwomakpa# and it has been trending since then on many lawyers social media fora.
According to the report , the Delta State Director of DSS has bluntly refused to release Barr. Tareri inspite of many interventions that has been made by well meaning members of the society and lawyers association.
The Nigerian Bar Association, Asaba Branch has stepped into the matter and is working on securing the release of Barr. Tareri from the DSS.
Confirming the continued detention of Barr. Tareri, a lawyer Barr. Kingsley Ebowe stated that the Chairman of the Asaba branch of the association as at the time of filing this report in the office of the DSS in Asaba trying to secure the release of Barr. Tareri.
Many lawyers have expressed disappointment with the acts of the DSS and threatened to take the matter further than just securing the release of Barr. Tareri.
Reacting to the report , a senior lawyer Ferdinand Orbih, SAN “ it is an assault on our profession if our colleague was detained merely because he accompanied his client to keep an appointment with the EFCC. Someone needs to be reminded that we are not in Hitler’s Nazi Germany. We are supposed to be in a democracy for goodness sake . I hope this matter doesn’t end at merely securing his release at the DSS… All of us are in danger if we cannot carry out our client’s instruction without being intimidated with the powers that be. It is simply unacceptable and we must demonstrate that by action. The Nigerian Bar Association must rise up to its responsibilities to defend our profession”
Reacting further Barr. Kunle Edun said “…Warri(Branch) will not let this go like that , the DSS will hear from us , they cannot be mightier than the law…”
Chief Razak O. Balogun, another senior lawyer said “...this is a clear case of abuse of office and must not end at releasing of our colleague so as to teach DSS so lessons. Maybe they are now emboldened because of the judges /justices saga, they think they can do anything and go away with it now”

This abuse on Lawyers does not just start! We the lawyers encouraged it. I can recall ad a pupil lawyer in the office of the present SSA to the President on Legislative Matters, I was assaulted by the Police when I went to the Akwa Ibom State Police State Headquarters to seek the release of my client.
Our law firm went to the State HC to seek the enforcement of my FHR. The State Counsel, now a Judge, raised a p.o. that the court did not have jurisdiction. It was struck out.
Then my boss said, “this thing is not just about me, today it’s me and tomorrow it may be against other lawyers”.
Note this, the State Counsel was a lawyer. The Judge was a lawyer. The seed they planted is germinating. So sad!
I thank the NBA for its timely intervention to secure my freedom from the DSSS detention. For the 3 days in their cell, they treated me in the most dehumanizing condition after they had removed my legal outfit from me, leaving me bare. They had handcuffs on my legs. However I kept reminding them that we are in a democracy where the rule of law is entrenched. Let’s condemn impunity of our security agencies to have a safer Nigeria. I appreciate ur support and God bless you. Tareri Avwomakpa LL.M
