Disaster in the Arabian Sea: Toxic Cargo Spill, Off Kerala Coast Sparks Coastal Emergency

Authorities in Kerala have issued a coastal alert after a cargo ship carrying oil and hazardous materials sank off the state’s coast in the Arabian Sea, raising fears of environmental damage and public health risks.

The Liberian-flagged vessel, MSC ELSA 3, capsized early Sunday morning about 38 nautical miles from Kochi. The ship was en route from Vizhinjam port when it began tilting due to flooding in one of its compartments.

All 24 crew members were rescued in a tense, hours-long operation by the Indian Navy. However, the real danger now lies in the ship’s cargo and fuel.

The vessel was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous materials and 12 containing calcium carbide—a chemical that reacts dangerously with water by releasing flammable gas. It also had more than 450 tonnes of diesel and furnace oil on board.

Authorities report that some containers have broken free and are drifting toward the coast, prompting evacuations in nearby areas. Residents have been warned not to touch any washed-up containers or oil. Fishermen have been told to steer clear of the sunken vessel’s location.

Kerala’s coastline, known for its biodiversity and as a popular tourist destination, is now under threat from the spreading oil slick.

The Indian Coast Guard has launched an emergency pollution control operation, deploying a vessel with cleanup equipment and an aircraft equipped with oil spill detection technology.

Officials say efforts to contain the spill have been ramped up, but the situation remains critical as the oil slick could reach anywhere along the state’s coast.
