[VIDEO] Edo Governor Warns Peter Obi: ‘Don’t Visit Without My Permission

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has issued a stern warning to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, cautioning that his security in the state would not be guaranteed if he visits without prior notice or permission from the state government.

The governor made the declaration on Friday during a defection rally in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, where he welcomed the former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly and current federal lawmaker, Hon. Marcus Onobun, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In his address, Governor Okpebholo referenced Obi’s recent July 7, 2025, visit to Edo State, during which the LP candidate donated ₦15 million to the St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing in Benin. The governor questioned the source of the donation, describing it as inconsistent with Obi’s public claim of having “no shishi” (no money).

“The man wey say he no get shishi, I’m sending a direct message to him: there is a new sheriff in town. He cannot come to Edo without telling me because his security will never be guaranteed. Whatever happens to him in Edo State, he will take it. I am serious about it,” Okpebholo said to a cheering crowd.

He further claimed that Obi’s last visit sparked unrest in the state, alleging that three people lost their lives in Benin shortly after the event.

“He came the other day and donated N15 million. Somebody wey say he no get shishi — where did he get N15 million to donate? After he left, there was crisis. Three people died in Benin. So tell Obi he should not come to Edo without telling me,” he declared.

A 57-second video from the event also captured Governor Okpebholo singing a popular gospel street anthem, “No be say we dey craze, na God we dey praise o,” to the amusement of supporters.

Turning to party matters, Okpebholo declared that the APC is now firmly in control of Edo politics and vowed that by the 2027 general elections, opposition parties would be completely wiped out from the state.

“We’re not begging anyone to join APC; they’re coming because they see results. In 2027, 2.5 million votes are guaranteed for President Bola Tinubu from Edo,” he said.

“Last week, we finally buried the PDP in Edo State. I saw someone crying at Ring Road, talking about 65% — that’s what we call social media winning. Today, Edo is turning into a construction site under our administration,” the governor added.

In his remarks, Hon. Marcus Onobun explained that his return to the APC was both ideological and strategic.

“I led the campaign for an Esan Governor. Now that we have one, I cannot remain in the opposition. I’ve seen what Governor Okpebholo is doing; Edo people have seen it too. I am back home to support him so that our people can benefit more,” he stated.

Onobun was accompanied by several political associates and former APC members who had earlier defected with him to the PDP.
