“EFCC, What About Tompolo?” Nigerians Call Out Selective Justice Over Viral Naira Spraying Video

Nigerians are flooding social media with demands for the arrest of ex-militant leader Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, after a video of naira abuse at his birthday celebration went viral.

In the video, allegedly recorded in April 2025, Tompolo is seen dancing while a man showers him with bundles of ₦1,000 notes — an act prohibited under Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act. The clip resurfaced on Sunday after a user named Harrison reposted it on X (formerly Twitter), tagging the EFCC with the caption: “EFCC, see Tompolo and the Naira o.”

The footage sparked outrage, with many netizens accusing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of double standards. They pointed to recent cases where celebrities like Bobrisky, E-Money, and Iyabo Ojo were swiftly arrested or invited for similar offences.

“EFCC only acts fast when it’s not their Ogas or elite friends,” wrote X user #NejeebBello, also referencing the sons of businessman Rasaq Okoya who faced no consequences after a naira-spraying incident in January.

Others, however, argued that Tompolo himself did not spray the money — he merely received it — suggesting a legal gray area that may weaken calls for prosecution.

Still, the public backlash shows no sign of slowing. Many citizens are challenging the EFCC to prove it enforces the law equally, regardless of status.

As of press time, the EFCC had not issued any statement on the incident, fueling further speculation about the agency’s impartiality.

Under the CBN Act of 2007 (as amended), abusing the naira — including spraying or dancing on notes at events — is a punishable offence that can attract fines, imprisonment, or both.

With the video still trending, the debate has reignited long-standing questions about justice, accountability, and whether powerful individuals can evade consequences in Nigeria.
