Enugu Law Officers Begin Seven-Day Warning Strike Over Unpaid Allowances

The Enugu chapter of the Law Officers Association of Nigeria has commenced a seven-day warning strike over the government’s failure to address outstanding welfare and remuneration issues affecting its members.

The association announced the industrial action in a statement signed by its state chairman, K.P. Onyia, and secretary, M.O. Onyeze, in Enugu and made available to BarristerNG on Friday, October 2.

It said the strike followed prolonged efforts to persuade the government to address what it described as the plight of law officers in the state.

Among its demands is the full harmonisation of members’ remuneration, including that of magistrates.

The association also demanded payment of members’ practising fees and annual fees for the Nigerian Bar Association’s annual conference.

Other demands include the payment and restoration of various allowances and professional fees, as well as the full restoration and payment of arrears of law officers’ transportation, hazard and wardrobe allowances.

The association directed its members to withdraw from official duties during the seven-day warning strike.

“During this period, no Law Officer in Abuja or Lagos Liaison Offices, Government House or any MDA shall be on duty, attend Court, or visit any Correctional Centre or Police and/or other Law Enforcement Agency in furtherance of any official duty; work from home or do anything on Government business pursuant to our collective resolution.” it said.

It further directed law officers to refrain from conducting government business in line with the association’s collective resolution.

The association expressed hope that the warning strike would give the authorities an opportunity to address its outstanding demands and prevent further industrial action.
