EU Donates €1.5 Million to Support Yelwata Crisis Victims, Internally Displaced Persons in Benue and Across Nigeria
The European Union (EU) has announced a humanitarian donation of €1.5 million to support victims of the recent crisis in Yelwata, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Benue State, and other affected communities across Nigeria.
EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Gautier Mignot, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja during a joint press conference with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
Mignot reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to Nigeria, describing the bloc as a “reliable partner” ready to stand by the country in both developmental and humanitarian situations.

“The European Union is a special partner to Nigeria, and in this fast-evolving world, when some partnerships are profoundly reviewed, we want to be a partner you can count on,” he said. “We are coming up with two additional support packages for Benue State, including immediate humanitarian action through our humanitarian office, ECHO, with €1.5 million in funding.”
He further revealed that the EU’s “Support for Internally Displaced Persons in Nigeria” project, which initially did not include Benue State, has now been expanded to cover the state. An additional €1 million has been earmarked for long-term assistance, including livelihoods and housing, to support the reintegration of displaced persons.
Mignot also stressed the need for broader collaboration between the public and private sectors to address rising humanitarian needs, noting the challenges of relying solely on international assistance.
“It’s difficult to rely on additional support from the international community, which makes domestic mobilisation necessary—from the Federal Government, State Governments, and the private sector,” he said. “This is a call to action for all sectors in Nigeria to contribute the much-needed resources.”
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, expressed appreciation to the EU for its generous contribution. He assured that the funds would be used judiciously to rebuild the lives and livelihoods of displaced and crisis-affected Nigerians.
“We thank the EU and other development partners. These funds will help us in rebuilding lives, livelihoods, and communities that have been torn apart by conflict,” Yilwatda stated.
