Executive-Legislative Collusion Threatens Nigeria’s Democracy — Baba-Ahmed Warns
Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, former Political Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, has warned that the growing alliance between the executive and legislative arms of government poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking on national television, Baba-Ahmed, also a former spokesman of the Northern Elders Forum and ex-INEC Secretary, said the current democratic system benefits only the ruling elite and not the Nigerian people. He expressed concern over the increasingly submissive attitude of the National Assembly, particularly the Senate led by Godswill Akpabio, toward the presidency.
He described the legislature as the most compliant in recent Nigerian history, accusing the executive of handpicking leaders of the other arms of government, thereby compromising their independence. He noted the Senate’s swift approvals of executive requests, including loans, and its premature endorsement of Tinubu for a second term as signs of deep institutional compromise.

According to Baba-Ahmed, this level of collusion undermines the democratic process and renders it irredeemable unless leaders commit to upholding the constitution in both letter and spirit.
He criticised Nigeria’s leadership trajectory since 1999, stating that each administration has performed worse than its predecessor. He described Obasanjo’s era as flawed, Yar’Adua’s as promising but short-lived, Jonathan’s as destructive, Buhari’s as inactive, and Tinubu’s as entitled and disconnected from the people’s needs.
Baba-Ahmed said the current government cannot rely solely on international ratings to measure success. Instead, it must consider how Nigerians live and feel. He declared that Tinubu’s administration has so far failed to meet the expectations of improved governance following Buhari’s tenure.
He urged the president to shift his leadership style, show empathy, cut waste, fight corruption, and tackle insecurity. He also questioned the use of revenue saved from subsidy removal, warning that the public remains in the dark about how the funds are being spent. He called for greater accountability and transparency to ensure the money is used to address poverty, improve infrastructure, and give young Nigerians a sense of hope.
