FG Approves 37 New Oil Evacuation Routes to Tackle Theft, Boost Daily Output

The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has revealed that the federal government has approved 37 new crude oil evacuation routes to combat oil theft and enhance production across the country.

Speaking at the 2025 Nigeria Oil and Gas (NOG) Energy Week in Abuja, NUPRC CEO Gbenga Komolafe emphasized that protecting oil assets is a key priority for the current administration. He noted that the new evacuation routes, coupled with increased collaboration with security agencies, are already delivering results in curbing theft and improving sector transparency.

“Our domestic crude supply strategy is ensuring local refineries have consistent feedstock,” Komolafe said. “This strengthens internal supply chains and bolsters economic resilience.”

He also praised the success of the HostComply platform, which he said has promoted transparency and delivered tangible benefits to oil-producing communities, fostering peace and social cooperation.

Digitisation, he added, is playing a transformative role in the industry. “Our full-scale digital systems are improving regulatory oversight with speed, clarity, and efficiency, giving investors greater confidence.”

Komolafe noted that under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria’s energy sector is undergoing a historic transformation, with over $16 billion in investment commitments recorded within just two years. This progress, he said, is largely due to the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 and the 2024 Executive Orders which introduced key fiscal incentives, encouraged local content, and improved contract efficiency.

“These reforms have provided the clarity investors need and repositioned the sector for stronger energy security and sustainable growth,” he stated.

He also stressed the importance of meeting global oil and gas demands — which currently supply over half of the world’s energy and are expected to remain dominant until 2050. According to Komolafe, failing to invest sufficiently — at least $640 billion annually through 2030 — would risk global instability.

“Let there be no doubt — global demand remains strong. Nigeria and Africa must not miss this opportunity,” he warned.

To meet these demands, the NUPRC is intensifying its One Million Barrels Initiative, launched in 2024. The goal: increase Nigeria’s oil output from 1.46 million barrels per day (bpd) to 2.5 million bpd by 2026. “We’ve already reached 1.7 million bpd. The strategy is clearly working,” Komolafe said.

He concluded by highlighting the commission’s commitment to climate responsibility, noting that even as oil and gas remain vital to the economy, the sector is aligning with Nigeria’s net-zero emissions target by 2060.
