FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Late Former President Buhari
The Nigerian government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday.
A statement from the Ministry of Interior announced the decision, noting that the holiday aligns with the seven-day national mourning period declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the announcement on behalf of the Federal Government following President Tinubu’s approval.
The Minister explained that the holiday serves as a mark of respect for Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and national progress. He added that the day offers Nigerians a moment to reflect on the former President’s life, leadership, and values.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister said.
It was earlier reported that the arrival of Buhari’s remains from the United Kingdom was delayed due to logistical complications. Originally scheduled to return on Monday, the body is now expected to arrive in Katsina at noon on Tuesday, with burial rites set for 2 p.m. in his hometown of Daura.
Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to the late President, confirmed the updated plans in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the burial will proceed according to Islamic rites.
Sources in the UK revealed that hospital protocols, flight arrangements, and other logistical challenges had made the earlier timeline unfeasible.
The public holiday on Tuesday is intended to give Nigerians an opportunity to mourn and pay respects to Buhari, a figure seen by many as both transformative and controversial.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who has been in London since Sunday, was reportedly briefed on the changes in the burial schedule.
On Sunday, President Tinubu ordered the national flag to be flown at half-mast for seven days, in memory of the late President. The directive, conveyed by the Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen, said the flag-lowering will continue through Saturday, July 19.
Speaking on behalf of the Federal Executive Council, SGF George Akume described Buhari as a patriot, a disciplined leader, and a statesman who served Nigeria with honour and integrity.
