FIDA (Nigeria) Abuja Branch Inaugurates her Student Chapter At Baze University [See Pictures]

The International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA (Nig.) Abuja, Branch on Tuesday, 20th February 2024, inaugurated her 2nd Student Chapter, FIDA (NIGERIA) BAZE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CHAPTER, ABUJA.

The Chairperson of the Branch, Chibuzo M. Nwosu in her welcome address, noted that the inauguration of the Student Chapter at Baze University is a significant milestone.

According to her “FIDA (Nigeria) Abuja Branch is a non-profit, non-political and non-governmental association whose main objective is to protect, promote and preserve the rights of women and children. These we realize through the provision of free and effective legal services, counselling, mediation and empowerment to indigent women/children who are victims of violence or threatened rights’ violation.”

She explained further that “FIDA is an Association of Women Lawyers who have been called to the practice of Law in Nigeria. However, the membership has been extended to female Law Students in Universities, Law Schools and Law Graduates. FIDA is an acronym for the Spanish name “Federacion Internacionale de Abogadas”; the English translation is “International Federation of Women Lawyers”. FIDA Nigeria has been in existence in Nigeria for Sixty (60) years with Forty-Five branches in thirty-six (36) States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory which is our own home branch. FIDA was formed in 1944 by some Mexican Female Lawyers.”

She noted that “The inclusiveness of the female law students is to groom the younger generation early to have the freedom to choose a befitting life style and live their own future in order to have a just, peaceful and equitable Nigerian Society where women and children’s rights and interests are guaranteed and protected in schools, homes and workplaces.”

Part of her welcome address reads “The inauguration of a new FIDA Abuja student Chapter today is a momentous occasion for our association across the nation. Today, FIDA (Nigeria) Abuja branch is filled with excitement and anticipation as it welcomes a highly esteemed FIDA Abuja, Baze University Student Chapter Executive to pilot the affairs of the Chapter in the next three years. With a reputation for excellence and a track record of success of this esteemed University, the inauguration of her Female Law Students is undoubtedly a significant milestone for the University community and FIDA movement in Nigeria.

“We understand how collaboration plays a vital role in advancing any organization’s mission so FIDA (Nig) Abuja Branch is intensely committed to working with this Chapter to see that female students in FIDA excel beyond their academics and also achieve the objectives of the Association.

“I say hearty congratulation to you all as you become part of this great Association,” she stated.

The Vice Chancellor of Baze University, Prof. Kathleen E. Okafor, SAN while presenting her goodwill message expressed great pleasure in the inclusivity of female law students as members of FIDA.

She further commended FIDA for her consistency and commitment towards its core values and cause.

For Prof. Agbo Madaki, the Dean Faculty of Law, Baze University, his joy knew no bound.

He noted that the institution has in the past eleven years graduated credible and distinguished intellectuals.

The elated Chairperson of the Student Chapter, Onemena Odebala, commended FIDA for the opportunity bestowed on them to serve.

The Inauguration also witnessed the presentation of copies of VAPP Act & FIDA Flyers by the Chairpersons of the Branch to the Chairperson of the Student Chapter.

The University Law Clinic Coordinator, Tosin Oke on the other hand in his closing remarks praised FIDA for the ground breaking innovation.
