FIRS Tax Evasion Case Against Binance Adjourned Over Judge’s Absence
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) case against Binance Holdings Limited was stalled on Wednesday due to the judge’s absence at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Justice Emeka Nwite, who was scheduled to preside over the tax evasion trial, was unavailable because of another official engagement. The case, which was meant to continue with the cross-examination of the third prosecution witness, has now been adjourned to October 14.
Binance Holdings Limited was re-arraigned on July 12, 2024, on a four-count charge related to tax evasion. Representing the company in court, Nigerian national Ayodele Omotilewa pleaded not guilty on its behalf.

The re-arraignment followed the removal of Binance executives Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla from the case. Justice Nwite, on June 14, 2024, discharged both individuals after the FIRS filed a revised charge listing only Binance as the defendant. The updated charge was filed a day after it was dated.
In a separate case, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is also pursuing Binance over alleged money laundering involving $35.4 million.
