Full Text of Goodwill Message Delivered by J-K Gadzama at NBA-SLP 2021 Annual Conference
Goodwill Message to the NBA – SLP 2021 Annual Conference, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State from 13th – 16th June, 2021 By JOE-KYARI GADZAMA, OFR, MFR, SAN, FNIALS, FCIArb., C.Arb. Fmr. Vice Chairman, NBA – SLP.
May I commend the organizers of this wonderful Annual Conference with the theme ‘Law, Lawyers and the Next Generation’. This conference brings together men and women of this reputable profession from all parts of this beloved Country, thus, stamping the essence of us all in making the future of this great Section of the NBA as well as this noble profession.
This Section was birthed at the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in 2003 with strategic focus to actualize its objectives which are: (a) To promote the exchange of information and views among individual members of the Section and other like-minded bodies as to the laws, practices and procedures affecting the Section locally and internationally; (b) to assist members to develop and improve their legal services to the public; (c) to undertake such related activities as may be approved by the Section’s council from time to time; (d) and to promote and provide Continuing Legal Education. All these put together with your cooperation will help us to navigate the murky waters in improving the standards of our services to mankind. From inception, one cannot deny the effect of this Section, poised to assist members of the legal profession in developing and improving legal services to the public.
I thank the Organizers of this Conference for inviting me to Chair the very important session on “Data Protection and Cyber Security: Are Law Firms Prepared?” This session is no doubt apt in view of the state of affairs in a world reduced into a tiny space by the internet.
I encourage us all to see this Conference beyond compliance to Rule 11 of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners, 2007, which makes mandatory continuing professional development but also a means of equipping us in harmonizing the law and lawyers for the next generation.
I wish us all fruitful deliberations during this conference and I hope that the knowledge gained at this conference will equip us positively towards having a robust legal practice that the next generation will be proud of.
