Gowon: I Want to Be Remembered as a Leader Who Truly Loved Nigeria
Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, has expressed his desire to be remembered as a leader who deeply loved Nigeria and its people.
Gowon, who led Nigeria between 1966 and 1975, shared his reflections in an interview with Journalists as he marked his 90th birthday. Speaking candidly, the elder statesman revisited the roots of the Nigerian Civil War, which erupted in July 1967 and lasted for 30 months.
He pointed to the January 1967 Aburi Summit in Ghana as a pivotal moment that could have averted the war. According to Gowon, Ojukwu insisted on a degree of regional autonomy that the federal government could not accommodate. This disagreement, he said, set Nigeria on the path to war.
When asked how he would like history to remember him, Gowon replied:
“I want to be remembered as someone who loves his country, Nigeria, who loves Nigerians, who prays. At least, if I cannot fight, I pray for Nigeria to continue to be a country that all of us love. I know it is impossible for any country to be absolutely perfect.”
Gowon’s remarks reflect a legacy marked by both the challenge of holding a fragile nation together and a lifelong commitment to national unity and peace.
