House Of Rep Speaker Withdraws Controversial Compulsory Voting Bill for Further Dialogue
The Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has officially withdrawn the contentious Compulsory Voting Bill, which sought to amend the Electoral Act 2022 to make voting mandatory for all eligible Nigerians.
The announcement was made on Monday through a statement by the Speaker’s special adviser on media and publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi. The withdrawal aims to create space for further discussions on the bill, which had sparked widespread controversy.
“After extensive consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, the Speaker has decided to withdraw the bill he co-sponsored with Hon. Daniel Adama Ago,” Krishi stated. “This will allow for more dialogue on cultivating a culture of voluntary participation that respects democratic values and citizens’ rights.”
