Lawyers Polls: Succession or Election- How do you want the President of the NBA Selected?
The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA , Mr AB Mahmoud SAN decried the chaotic and costly nature of the Association’s elections and electioneering process and indicated his resolve to explore the possibility of an alternative plan where Leaders of the Association will be selected by a seamless leadership succession plan devoid of the chaos often associated with elections. Mr Mahmoud made this known in the Association’s just concluded national executive committee meeting held in Aba, Abia State.
This move by Mr Mahmoud have generated mixed reactions from members of the association. Those opposed to the move describe it as undemocratic and a slide into the tyranny of a cable who will decide who gets what, while those in support of it point out that Professional Associations all over the world have adopted a leadership succession plan as opposed to elections. They refer to Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria ICAN as a great example of how seamless succession works to reduce friction in a professional Association.
