HURIWA Stages Protest in Abuja, Demands FG Halt Funding to APC-Appointed Osun LG Officials Defying Court Orders
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) staged a protest in Abuja on Tuesday, urging the Federal Government to halt funding to individuals allegedly occupying local government positions in Osun State under the All Progressives Congress (APC), in defiance of court rulings.
Starting at Unity Fountain, the demonstrators marched to the offices of the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Finance, where they delivered letters demanding the enforcement of judicial decisions and respect for the rule of law.
Speaking during the demonstration, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, accused APC officials of unlawfully maintaining control of local government council secretariats in Osun, despite court judgments invalidating their positions.

The protest, titled “Presentation of Letters Demanding Local Government Autonomy and Adherence to the Rule of Law,” was aimed at calling out what HURIWA described as “institutional lawlessness and political impunity.”
Onwubiko condemned the continued occupation of local offices by APC members as a direct violation of the Nigerian Constitution and the democratic rights of the people.
“We are here today to protest the financial damage caused by the APC’s refusal to vacate offices they no longer hold by law,” he said. “Despite clear court rulings, APC officials continue to pose as chairmen and councillors in Osun without any legal mandate.”
HURIWA called on the Minister of Finance to stop releasing funds to these individuals and instead recognize the duly elected PDP officials, who emerged from the February 22, 2025, local government elections in accordance with the OSSIEC notice and Electoral Act 2022.
“This is not just about legality—it’s about protecting democracy and restoring public trust in our institutions,” Onwubiko added. “Continuing to fund illegal officeholders sends a dangerous message and could lead to further instability.”
The group urged the Minister of Finance and Justice to work together to enforce court rulings and restore democratic order in Osun State’s local governance.
