Husband killing: Court of appeal rules on Maryam Sanda’s appeal, Friday
The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division has reserved today, Friday for judgment in the appeal filed by Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death by hanging for killing her husband Bilyaminu Bello.
Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court had in January convicted Maryam for the killing, but she appealed the ruling in February, asking the appellate court to set aside her conviction and acquit her.
Counsel to Maryam Sanda, Joe Gadzama, had argued that the conviction of his client was based on circumstantial evidence.
He said there was no evidence of witnesses, lack of confessional statement, absence of murder weapon, and lack of autopsy report to determine the true cause of her husband’s death.
It would be recalled that a month after Justice Yusuf Halilu had condemned her to death by hanging, Maryam rejected the death sentence, saying the trial judge denied her right to fair hearing, among others.
