‘I Could Not Let Them Die’: Injured Pilot Recounts Struggle to Save Flydubai Passengers

Indian pilot Smit Machchhar said he acted to protect passengers after allegedly being attacked by his co-pilot aboard a Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight, telling Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday that he knew he could not allow the aircraft’s passengers to die.

“I was trying to save my own life, but I knew I could not let all those people die,” Machchhar said during a phone call with Modi from his hospital bed. Modi later posted a video of the conversation on social media.

The Boeing 737, operated by Dubai-based flydubai, was carrying 174 passengers when the confrontation occurred on Wednesday.

Machchhar, who has 17 years of aviation experience, including 11 years as a captain, described how he realised the aircraft was descending while he was seriously injured.

“I had suffered so many injuries that I had collapsed. At that time, I could feel that the aircraft was going down. I knew this was the last push, that the door was right there,” he said.

Machchhar said he continued to act despite being attacked, eventually opening the cockpit door as passengers rushed in.

“I was being hit even then, but I just opened the door and everyone came in,” he said.

He said his years of experience in aviation helped him understand what was happening even as he lay injured.

The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation. The co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar, leaving him wounded and triggering a struggle for control of the aircraft.

Passengers subsequently rushed into the cockpit and helped regain control after the plane suddenly plunged, losing about 17,000 feet in altitude within a minute, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24.

The aircraft was rerouted and made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, preventing a potential crash.

Modi praised Machchhar’s actions, saying they helped save hundreds of lives and avert “a great tragedy.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier credited Machchhar and the passengers with helping prevent a catastrophe.

The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to establish the circumstances that led to the confrontation aboard the flight.
