“I Never Ordered His Arrest” — Sen. Lawan Denies Silencing Critic of Yobe Water Project
Former Senate President and current senator representing Yobe North, Ahmad Lawan, has strongly denied allegations linking him to the arrest of Ishe’u Ibrahim Jadda—a constituent reportedly detained after criticizing the Gashua Water Supply Project.
In a statement issued on Saturday by his media adviser, Dr. Ezrel Tabiowo, Lawan described the claims as “malicious” and “false,” accusing the unnamed online platform of attempting to damage his reputation. The report had alleged that Jadda was arrested for speaking out against the recently commissioned water project in Gashua, a town in Lawan’s senatorial district.
Lawan firmly rejected the accusation, asserting that he remains a staunch defender of democratic principles, including freedom of speech and the rule of law. He emphasized that he has never, and would never, use his office to silence dissenting voices.

“To suggest that a man of such pedigree would orchestrate the arrest of a constituent for exercising his constitutional right to free speech is not only absurd but an affront to his decades of principled service,” the statement read.
The senator also defended the Gashua Water Supply Project, highlighting that it was launched to address a severe health crisis in the area, particularly a high incidence of kidney disease linked to unsafe water sources.
Lawan said he welcomes constructive criticism and challenged the publication to produce evidence to support its claims. He reiterated his commitment to serving his constituents with integrity and delivering effective, responsive representation.
