IGP Seeks Virtual Testimony from UK-Based Witness in Abuja Visa Fraud Case
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has asked the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Jabi, Abuja, to allow a UK-based complainant, Mr. Opeyemi Makinde, to testify virtually in an ongoing visa fraud trial.
The case involves Shitta Waliu Aderibigbe and Fanzine Educational Consult, who were arraigned for allegedly providing false information to the British Embassy. The charge accuses Aderibigbe of falsely claiming that Makinde was married to a woman named Dolapo Afussat Yusuf—a claim that reportedly led to deportation proceedings against Makinde in the United Kingdom.
Aderibigbe, who pleaded not guilty, was granted bail in the sum of ₦1 million. He was also ordered to produce two sureties, both of whom must be civil servants at least on Grade Level 9 and residents of the FCT. The sureties are also required to submit passport photographs to the court registry.

At the hearing on Wednesday, Prosecution Counsel Veronica Bissang requested an adjournment, explaining that Makinde—currently fighting deportation in a London court—was unavailable to testify in person but willing to appear virtually.
“The case is for hearing, but the complainant is currently in the UK. We ask for a new date so he can testify virtually. Other witnesses are also unavailable due to official assignments,” she told the court.
However, the Defence Counsel, M.D. Owolabi, opposed the motion, calling it frivolous.
Justice Ademuyiwa Oyeyipo, who presided over the matter, adjourned the case to September 22, 2025, citing the court’s annual vacation beginning in the second week of July.
The two-count charge, dated April 9, 2024, accuses Aderibigbe and the firm of conspiring with the now-at-large Dolapo Afussat Yusuf to mislead public officials and provide false information—acts punishable under Sections 97(1) and 140 of the Penal Code Act.
