Iron Lady, worthy of Recognition in Northern Nigeria

Dr Zainab S. Bagudu, Giwar Mata as she was called, The Mother of the Motherless and the hope of Hopeless, is a housewife, Consultant Paediatrician, the current first lady of Kebbi State, and proudly a daughter to Alhaji Umaru and Hajiya Rakiya Shinkafi. She is also an advocate for women’s health, Child rights with a particular focus on cancer Campaign and other health and humanitarian activities within Kebbi State and the Nation at large. As has been said, behind every successful man is a woman, this woman is the root of her husband’s successful wins and legacies. His Excellency, the current governor of Kebbi State H.E Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (Damo Sarkin Hakuri), a Leader by example and an epitome of good governance.

She attended Queens College, Lagos in 1984 and obtained her first degree in MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine) from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and then attended United Kingdom where she specialized in Paediatrics and Neonatology and also got her Master’s Degree in Paediatrics with a Diploma in Tropical Child Health. She is an active member of Royal College of Paediatrics and Child health, Nigerian Medical association (NMA) and other Health professional Bodies. She was one of the nominees of the Most Valuable Governors’ Wives Award.

Her academic and professional qualifications are reckoned and successful. Her professional outstanding capacity keeps her prospering. The Iron lady has proven the saying: “What a man can do, a woman can do much better”. She is presently the head, Paediatric Unit of Garki Hospital and also contributed to an innovative Diagnostics Centre with loud success in Medicaid Radio Diagnostics.

Her hard work, determination, dedication, patience, diligence and courage which she learned from her parents together with charity, good heart, empathy and sympathy for the needy and orphans she inherited from her parents in humanitarian services eventually made her the founder of Medical Cancer Foundation (MCF). The NGO is aimed at creating awareness on health matters, with continuous training of health workers with eminent support in funding for diagnosis and treatment of people with cancer in Nigeria. All Praise be to almighty Allah, the Goal is being achieved in many states and people are greatly benefiting from it. Across some years, this foundation has reached a milestone in terms of treatment centres initiation within Nigeria which provide treatment and support for cancer patients particularly and other related illnesses.

She built and trained many young adults on so many projects and showed a keen interest in early year’s education and this describes her as a political elite and a fundraiser for the treatment of cancer patients and internally displaced persons in the North Eastern part of the nation.

Her selfless service, hard work and outstanding humanity yielded her flying results and unforgettable achievements. She is one of the ministerial committee members for building the best and capacitated world class diagnostic centres in Northern Nigeria, she is also the best member of the Board of directors of Union for National Cancer Control (UNCC) and was re-elected during a contest at the 2018 World Cancer Summit held in Malaysia.

She presided numerous health programmes under her office as the first lady such as Immunization, distribution of birth kits, sickle cell related illnesses, spearheaded girl child education, school enrolment Under UNICEF and always maintained a laud her voice in fight against cancers in Nigeria particularly breast and cervical cancers.

Her main aim is to ensure that everyone is carried along in promoting a healthy lifestyle, by seeing a history of lack of access to health care among cancer patients in Nigeria. In lieu of that, she launched a ‘Kick and Walkway Cancer’ in October 2020. To further disseminate information on the cancer malaise and aid early detection. She is an unstoppable achiever, skyrocket that speed up with nothing but success. She is just a true definition of a leader.
