A human right Lawyer, Arome Odoma Esq. has described Nigerian Bar Association’s move to defend INEC after depriving lawyers of voting in the just concluded election as a ‘serious abbreviation’.

In a statement made available to BarristerNG on Sunday, Mr. Odoma said “The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is a non-profit, umbrella of professional, association of all lawyers admitted to the bar in Nigeria. It is engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights, the rule of law and good governance in Nigeria. The organization is never expected to be seen defending what is wrong in the eyes of the law.

“I read on the headline captioned “2023 Election Cases: NBA members to defend INEC in court free of charge”. It is a serious abbreviation under the current leadership of NBA to defend an organization that decieved Nigerians into an election that they were not prepared for despite the availability of fund to the tune of N355 billion, which is the product of sweat of tax payers.

“It is also a serious abbreviation on the side of NBA if they should go ahead to defend INEC on an election that members including myself were deprived of voting during the presidential election.

“For God’s sake, what do they intend to defend? Defending an excercise that I was with my ballot papers and was ready to cast my vote when ballot box snatchers made away with ballot box within split seconds? What is the purport of the defense? Defending INEC as an indigent organization or what? Is NBA not suppose to promote the rights of Nigerians including members? If NBA is to promote the right of Nigerians including members, then it is a serious abbreviation for NBA to defend INEC in an event where Nigerians and members of same NBA were deprived of their right to vote.

“On the whole, I urge the NBA leadership not to venture into defending the electoral evil made during the conduct of the said election and uphold the sanctity of the great name “Nigerian Bar Association” for the purpose of posterity,” he stated.
