Kanu Has No Case to Answer — IPOB Slams FG Over ‘Bogus’ Treason Charges
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has once again called on the international community and the Nigerian government to release its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, describing him as a “prisoner of conscience” who has no legitimate case to answer.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group accused the Nigerian state of using fabricated charges of treasonable felony and terrorism to unjustly detain Kanu, despite earlier legal rulings in his favor.
“We are not begging for mercy — we are demanding justice,” the statement said. “The charges against Kanu are not only baseless but also expose the judiciary’s descent into a cesspool of oppression and dereliction.”

IPOB clarified that the original treason charges against Kanu were dropped years ago when former Attorney General Abubakar Malami acknowledged the government had no solid case. The group alleged that in a bid to suppress the Biafran movement, the government subsequently introduced terrorism charges, even though a Federal High Court had earlier ruled that IPOB is a lawful organization.
The group criticized Malami’s use of “forum shopping” to secure a proscription order from Justice Kafarati’s court without affording IPOB the right to a fair hearing, calling it a violation of Nigeria’s Constitution.
Highlighting what it called an “abuse of judicial process,” IPOB slammed the Court of Appeal’s use of a civil stay of execution to reverse a criminal court ruling that discharged and acquitted Kanu — a move they say defies legal logic.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s only ‘crime’ is his relentless pursuit of self-determination for the Biafran people,” IPOB said. “His continued detention is not only illegal, it is a stain on the conscience of a nation.”
The group warned that Nigeria risks damaging its global reputation by continuing what it calls a campaign of persecution against Kanu, while turning its judiciary into a “laughing stock.”
Concluding the statement, IPOB urged Nigerians and the global community to scrutinize the legal travesty unfolding in Kanu’s case, stating, “Those encouraging President Tinubu’s administration to continue down this path are pushing Nigeria toward moral and legal collapse. Nnamdi Kanu’s unbreakable spirit in the face of injustice is a testament to the righteousness of our cause.”
