Lagos Chief Judge Inaugurates Two Election Appeal Tribunals Ahead of LG Polls, Charges Members to Uphold Integrity and Adhere to Legal Timeframes
Ahead of Saturday’s Lagos Local Government elections, the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, on Friday inaugurated two LG Election Appeal Tribunals.
Each tribunal will sit concurrently—one on Lagos Island and the other in Ikeja—comprising four chief magistrates and headed by a retired High Court judge.
Justice Taofikat Oyinkan-Abdullahi (retd.) will chair the Lagos Island panel, with Magistrates Michael Olubi, Olaitan Ajayi, Salamah Matepo, and Hotepo Lazarus serving as members.

The Ikeja panel will be led by Justice Sherifah Solebo (retd.) and will include Magistrates Davies Rasak, Oluwatosin Fowowe-Erusiafe, Adepeju Odusanya, and Lynda Balogun.
Speaking at the inauguration held in the Ikeja High Court Conference Room, Justice Alogba urged the tribunal members to discharge their duties with “utmost integrity, fairness, and fidelity to the law.”
He emphasized the importance of adhering strictly to the time frame stipulated in the 2016 amendment to the Lagos State Local Government Law, which allows 21 days for filing petitions after election results are declared and 45 days for the tribunal to conclude proceedings.
“Any decision or action taken outside the legally prescribed time limit is a nullity and of no legal effect,” Alogba warned.
He expressed confidence in the competence and judgment of the appointees, charging them to uphold justice without fear or favour and to resist all forms of bias or intimidation.
“Lagos State judiciary is well known for its integrity and as a torchbearer in the nation’s judiciary,” the Chief Judge said. “I urge you to put in your best so that the outcomes of your decisions will be respected by society. Naturally, someone will lose—but justice must prevail.”
