Lawmaker: Senators Now Get N2B, Reps N1B for Projects Since Subsidy Removal
A Nigerian federal lawmaker has sparked public outrage after revealing that Senators and House of Representatives members now receive unprecedented sums—ranging from ₦1 billion to ₦2 billion each—for so-called “constituency projects,” a scheme long criticized for enabling budget fraud and corruption.
The unnamed lawmaker, speaking during a public event in Osun State, disclosed that since the removal of fuel subsidy under President Bola Tinubu, lawmakers have enjoyed significantly inflated project allocations.
According to him, “There is no honourable member in Nigeria currently getting less than ₦1 billion for constituency projects. For Senators, it’s now not less than ₦2 billion.”

He explained that the sharp increase began last year, shortly after the fuel subsidy was scrapped—a policy move that has plunged millions of Nigerians into deeper poverty and hardship.
“Once subsidy was removed and states began receiving more money, the same applied to National Assembly members,” he said. “Don’t assume that when a Rep is doing a project, it’s from his personal money—it’s from these allocations.”
The comments have reignited criticism of Nigeria’s National Assembly, often accused of operating under a veil of secrecy, with little accountability for how public funds are spent.
Investigations by SaharaReporters have previously revealed that many of these “constituency projects” are either never executed, are shoddily done, or are outright ghost projects. Often, the contracts are awarded to cronies, inflated in cost, or quietly abandoned—leaving communities without essential infrastructure like clean water, schools, and health centers.
Despite receiving trillions of naira since 1999 for these projects, most Nigerians continue to suffer from poor services and worsening living conditions, while lawmakers enjoy lavish perks and unchecked allocations.
The revelation has only deepened public frustration over the growing disconnect between Nigeria’s political elites and the people they claim to represent.
