Lawyers Affirm Fubara’s Immunity Remains Intact Amid EFCC Arrest Rumors, Tenure Not Terminated

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is reportedly preparing to investigate suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, in connection with alleged corruption and abuse of office. According to investigative journalist Jackson Ude, an insider source claims the EFCC is compiling charges that could prevent Fubara’s return to office until the end of his tenure in 2027.

Fubara’s suspension came after a political crisis in Rivers State, allegedly fueled by former Governor Nyesom Wike. Wike, backed by 27 members of the state House of Assembly, orchestrated Fubara’s removal, leading to the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as the Sole Administrator for the state, effectively sidelining Fubara and other elected officials.

The insider source suggests that the ongoing EFCC investigation is part of a broader strategy to ensure Fubara remains suspended. However, legal experts are raising concerns over the legality of arresting a sitting governor, as Nigerian law grants immunity unless the governor is impeached.

While Fubara remains suspended, his constitutional immunity complicates any efforts by the EFCC to bring charges against him, raising questions about the agency’s jurisdiction in this matter.

The allegations against Fubara have sparked heated debates online, with many critics calling for scrutiny of Wike’s own actions during his time in office. Some commentators have accused Wike of using “criminal tactics” to manipulate political outcomes, while others demand accountability for his governance.
