Lawyers are tired of being endangered in Nigeria – Dr Gerald Abonyi reacts to the deaths of Chief Oguejiofor and Onwubiko

The recent deaths of 2 Lawyers (last week- on or about the 8th day of February 2024 – Chief Jude Oguejiofor in Nnewi Anambra State and Barr Victor Onwubiko at Okigwe in Abia State on the 10th day of February 2024 by murderous rampaging kidnapers is certainly the worst case scenario of how endangered and close to extinction that the Legal Practice and Profession has become in Nigeria.

I have personally decided to exit the Anti Death Penalty Organization of Agency France Frontiers as a deliberate decision to protest these wanton and unabated slaughter of Nigerian Lawyers in recent times by murderous gangs.

The Fatalities and murderous scores are in the public domain and practitioners are now forced to live a life of severe apprehension and fear of seeing another day. The terrible situation underscores the criminal deadly level of insecurity and banditry bedeviling the Nation – Nigeria in recent times as the deadly/ murderous merchants without seeking identification of their potential victims, use lethal light arms to force their victims to stop on the highways.

The entire Country is bedeviled by this atrocious malaise and the government are simply overwhelmed by the severity and sophistication of the murderous gangs without a credible solution in hand.

I call on the security agencies especially the Directorate of State Services to think outside the box, provide relevant intelligence to nip these devilish activities in their bud. The perpetrators are if not Nigerians, conniving with the locals. They should take responsibilities or quit their security leadership roles. “One cannot be a General only in his bedroom ” goes a saying.

Lawyers are tired of being endangered in Nigeria.
