Lawyers Becoming An Endangered Species -By Auta Nyada Esq

When I wrote on lawyers becoming an endangered species a few years ago, I had hoped it would be the only time I’d have to address this harrowing topic. But the senseless killings and brutal annihilation of members of the legal profession continue to weigh heavy on our hearts, forcing me to revisit this dire situation.

With a profound sense of anguish, I now raise my voice to join those who have spoken before me. I vehemently condemn the gruesome murder of our colleague, Mr. Awa Peter Awa. Before his wanton killing, he served with distinction as the Vice-Chairman of the Idimili Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association and as the Director of Public Prosecutions of Anambra State.

Tragically, in another heartbreaking scenario, our colleague, J.S. Azoro, Esq., has been in the clutches of kidnappers for over a week now. Still on this trend, only a couple of days ago, we were again notified of the kidnapping of yet another colleague, Roland Opuole, Esq. – a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar and member of the NBA Calabar Branch.

These acts of cruelty, inhumanity, and pure despicability must be denounced by all who value justice and the rule of law.

The legal profession is a pillar that upholds the unity and balance of our society, ensuring economic viability in our country. It is a profession that deserves unwavering protection and support from the very fabric of our nation.

With a heavy heart, I stand in solidarity with the grieving family of the deceased and the entire legal community in Anambra State. I offer my deepest condolences during this unimaginably difficult time. May the Almighty God provide comfort and solace to us all.

To our colleagues still held captive, I pray for your swift and safe return to your families, unharmed and whole.

I implore the relevant authorities to rise to the occasion and bring the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice. This is a test of our resolve to safeguard the very fabric of our society.
