The Admiralty Lawyers’ Society of Nigeria has felicitated with Nigerians and the Federal Government on the occasion of the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, while commending the government’s efforts to position Nigeria as a leading maritime hub. In a statement signed by its President, Angus Obinna Chukwuka, the Society particularly applauded the creation of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, describing the initiative as a significant step towards deepening the development of Nigeria’s maritime sector.

The Society also welcomed the Federal Government’s plans to develop six new deep-sea ports in Ibom, Bakassi, Agge, Gateway, Ondo and Bonny, as well as efforts to rehabilitate existing eastern ports and decongest the Lagos ports. It said an integrated maritime logistics network and globally competitive port system could significantly expand international trade, increase national income and GDP, create employment opportunities and contribute to reducing social vices such as kidnapping, banditry and armed robbery.

The Society called on the Federal Government to deploy the necessary machinery and appoint competent personnel to ensure the successful implementation of its maritime development plans, while urging stronger procurement and audit systems to guard against corruption and administrative bottlenecks. It also emphasized the importance of capacity building in the admiralty and maritime sector, announcing its forthcoming Blue Economy Course in Port Harcourt from October 27 to 29, 2026, which it said is designed to prepare lawyers and non-lawyers for emerging opportunities in Nigeria’s blue economy.

THE NIGERIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION AND THE FUTURE OF THE MARITIME INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA

ADMIRALTY LAWYERS’ SOCIETY OF NIGERIA heartily felicitates with Nigerians and the federal government of Nigeria on the occasion of celebration of the 66th Independence Anniversary.

The society applauds the federal government’s initiative in creating the Ministry of Marine And Blue Economy. This is a significant stride towards deepening the development of the maritime sector to put Nigeria in it’s pride of place within the comity of nations.

The society further praises the federal government’s decision to develop six new deep sea ports in Nigeria as follows:
a) Ibom deep seaport (Akwa Ibom State)

b) Bakkasi deep sea ports (Cross Rivers State)

c) Agge Deep seaport (Bayelsa State)

d) Gateway deep sea port (Gun State)

e) Ondo deep sea ports (Ondo State)

f) Bonny deep sea port (Rivers State)

It is also commendable that the federal government has also undertaken to renovate or reinvigorate the alreadv existina eastern ports and what is more ta decongest the Lagos ports, ensure integrated maritime logistics network for ease of maritime commerce, and create a port system that is globally competitive.

These intentions if implemented will make Niaeria a truly international maritime hub. They will greatly enhance international trade across the Nigeria. Also Nigeria’s national income and her Gross domestic product will experience and remarkable boost. Employment opportunities will be tremendously harnessed with the consequent effect that kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery and other social vices will be substantially reduced, if not totally eliminated.

We call on the federal government to activate all machineries towards the achievement of these set goals. The right personnel should be appointed into the appropriate authorities to give effect to federal government’s intentions.

The government should also sharpen the nation’s procurement and audit system to ensure that these expressed intentions are not frustrated by corruption and administrative bottleneck.

Finally, it has become imperative for individuals and corporate organizations to embark extensively on capacity building in the admiralty sector. This will ensure efficiency and efficacy of maritime operations while providing the necessary manpower, within the context of local content, required for a prospering blue economy in Nigeria. Ultimately capital flight will be sustainably prevented.

It is for this singular reason that the society has organized a blue economy course to hold in Port Harcourt from 27 to 29 Oct 2026 and implores the general public, both lawyers and non lawyers to take the advantage of this forthcoming blue economy training to prepare for the opportunities that will present themselves by the time the federal government begins to roll out the drums.

Once more, Happy Independence Day Celebration!!
